3月21日、よく晴れ渡った茅ヶ崎のウッドデッキ広場。この日は「日本スタンドアップパドルボード協会」が広場を貸し切り、華やかな表彰式が行われていました。海での大会を終えた直後でしょうか、東の空の向こうに江ノ島を望む最高のロケーションの中、順位が決定された選手たちが表彰の時を迎えています。

SUPという競技はまだこれから発展していく段階なのか、参加者の数は少し控えめにも見えましたが、それを補って余りあるのが女性アナウンサーの力強い声。一段とボリュームを上げたその声が、広場全体を大会らしい高揚感で満たしていました。栄えある優勝を勝ち取った選手には、心からの「おめでとう」を贈りたいですね。

ふと目を向ければ、ウッドデッキの西端には売店の車も出張しており、イベントに彩りを添えています。右手にパドルを持ち、左手には愛犬を連れて歩く参加者の姿も、いかにもこの地にふさわしい自由な風景です。くつろいだ姿勢や服装、そして誰をも歓迎するような大らかな雰囲気。このスポーツが持つ「自由」の精神と、湘南の広い心が共鳴する、実になごやかな春のひとときでした。

Cheers Under the Shonan Sky: The Free-Spirited Bonds of SUP

March 21st, shortly before 3:30 PM. On a beautifully sunny Saturday afternoon, the wooden deck square was filled with a unique energy, quite different from the usual weekend vibe. The Stand Up Paddleboard Association of Japan (SUPA) held an event, transforming the square into a celebratory stage for an awards ceremony.

Under the clear Shonan sky, with Enoshima visible in the distance to the east, athletes who had just completed their competition out at sea were being honored. While the number of participants felt a bit modest—perhaps reflecting that SUP is still a growing sport—the enthusiastic voice of the female announcer more than made up for it. Her powerful commentary filled the square with a true sense of achievement. We definitely want to say a big “Congratulations!” to the winners.

At the western edge of the deck, a mobile food vendor added to the festive atmosphere. One participant, carrying a paddle in his right hand and leading a dog with his left, embodied the quintessentially free-spirited lifestyle of this area. The relaxed poses, casual attire, and welcoming attitude of everyone present perfectly captured the spirit of “freedom” that this sport represents, harmonizing beautifully with the open-hearted nature of Chigasaki.
