The Changing Coastline: Chigasaki’s New Landscape Awaiting Spring

茅ヶ崎サザンC前のサイクリングロードに立てられた看板。ほぼ一年がかりという大工事も、いよいよ3月27日の完了予定日が見えてきました。この道が工事で閉ざされていた期間を思うと、ようやくこの場所が本来の姿を取り戻すのだという感慨が湧いてきます。

Reflecting on the time this path was closed, I feel a deep sense of relief that this place is finally returning to its original form.

工事現場のあちこちに「段差あり」の注意書きが目立ちます。サザンC側から眺めるとまだ地面は剥き出しで、舗装を待つ状態。工事の影響で一時的に避難していた「八大龍王神」の姿もなく、いつもの景色が少しだけ寂しく、かつての賑わいが待ち遠しく感じられる午後のひとときです。

“Caution: Uneven Surface” signs are prominent throughout the construction site. Looking from the Southern C side, the ground is still bare, waiting to be paved. The “Hachidai Ryuo-shin” (Eight Great Dragon Kings) shrine has been temporarily moved for the work, making the familiar scenery feel a bit lonely. I find myself longing for the usual lively atmosphere during this afternoon stroll.

菱沼海岸まで足を伸ばすと、一足先に工事の囲いが撤去されていました。警告看板もなくなり、サーファーたちが自由に波打ち際へと向かっていきます。浜辺のベンチも開放され、誰もがふらりと立ち寄って海を眺めることができる、湘南らしい自由な空気感が戻ってきました。

Over at Hishinuma Beach, the construction fences have been removed ahead of schedule. With the warning signs gone, surfers are once again heading freely toward the water’s edge. The beach benches are open to the public, restoring that classic Shonan vibe where anyone can just stop by and gaze at the ocean.

嬉しい変化がありました。工事のために場所を譲っていた八大龍王神が、ようやく元の位置にお戻りになりました。地域を見守る存在が定位置に落ち着くと、それだけで海岸全体の空気が引き締まり、守られているような安心感に包まれます。

A welcome change: the Hachidai Ryuo-shin shrine, which had been relocated for the construction, has finally been returned to its original spot. Having this guardian of the local area back in its rightful place brings a sense of serenity and security to the entire coastline.

ついに新しいアスファルトが敷かれました。古い道路との境目がくっきりと鮮やかで、真新しい道路独特の匂いが漂ってくるようです。一方で、長年親しんだ物見台がいつの間にか撤去されており、刻一刻と景色が書き換えられていく寂しさも少しだけ胸をかすめます。

The new asphalt has finally been laid. The boundary between the old road and the new is sharp and vivid, and the distinct scent of fresh pavement lingers in the air. On the other hand, the observation platform I’d grown fond of over the years has been removed unnoticed, bringing a slight pang of sadness as the landscape is rewritten moment by moment.

ウッドデッキにはSUPのテントが登場し、茅ヶ崎漁港入口付近では生い茂っていた草木が綺麗に刈り取られました。何かが新しく始まる予感。次はここにどんな光景が広がるのでしょうか。春の訪れとともに、海岸線が活気づいていく準備が着々と進んでいるようです。

A SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard) tent has appeared on the wooden deck, and the overgrown vegetation near the entrance to Chigasaki Fishing Port has been neatly cleared. There’s a sense of a new beginning in the air. I wonder what kind of scenery will unfold here next. It seems preparations are well underway for the coastline to come alive with the arrival of spring.

実質的な工事完了の日を迎えました。見事に舗装された道は、これから多くのサイクリストや散歩の人々を迎え入れることでしょう。物見台があった場所もすっかり平坦になり、数年後には「ここに何があったか」を知る人も少なくなってしまうのかもしれません。だからこそ、今この瞬間を記録に留めておきたいと思うのです。

Today marks the functional completion of the construction. This beautifully paved road will surely welcome many cyclists and pedestrians in the days to come. The area where the observation platform once stood is now completely flat; in a few years, perhaps fewer people will remember what used to be here. That is precisely why I want to capture and record this very moment.

3月28日、午後4時のサザンビーチ。この場所では、少年野球は最も愛されているスポーツの一つです。手前では、小学生らしき少年と、紅一点、少し年上に見えるお姉さんが真剣にボールを投げ合っています。その奥でも、少年同士が夢中でキャッチボール。バッターは居ないようですが、投げられたボールを捕るのは意外と難しいものです。時々ポロリと取り損ねるのも、またご愛敬。まだ試合にはなりませんが、ここは文字通り「草野球の入口」。将来の大谷選手を夢見て、白球を追う背中には思わずエールを送りたくなります。

ふとサイクリングロードに目を向ければ、ジョギングに精を出す人、自転車にボードを積んで走るサーファー、犬と散歩するおじさん、そしてスマホ片手に歩く女性や仲睦まじい親子連れ。

同じ時刻、世界のどこかでは戦火に怯える人々がいることを思うと、こうして平和な日常の中で、予測可能な明日を信じられることの尊さが身に染みます。この穏やかな湘南の春が、いかに貴重な宝物であるかを再確認させてくれる、そんな夕暮れ前の一幕でした。

Sandlot Dreams: White Balls Dancing in the Spring Breeze

March 28th, shortly after 4 PM. Southern Beach has transformed into a vast playground, with people gathered across the sands to play ball. Youth baseball is clearly one of the favorite pastimes here. In the foreground, a young boy is playing catch with a girl who looks a bit older. Further back, another pair of boys is engrossed in their own game of catch. There are no batters in sight, but catching a thrown ball is harder than it looks. Every now and then, a ball slips through their hands—a charming part of the learning process. They aren’t ready for a real game yet; this is the very beginning of “sandlot baseball”. Watching them chase their dreams of becoming the next Shohei Ohtani, one can’t help but root for them.

On the nearby cycling road, the scene is equally lively: joggers, surfers on bicycles, a man walking his dog, a woman on her smartphone, and families strolling together.

Thinking about how other parts of the world are under the shadow of war at this very moment, it makes one realize how precious it is to live in peace and have a predictable tomorrow. This peaceful spring afternoon in Shonan is a reminder of just how invaluable these quiet, everyday moments truly are.
